A Karachi University student accident on Friday morning left the campus community in shock after a young woman was crushed to death by a university bus. According to campus authorities, the student — identified as Aniqa, a second-year student of the Department of Social Welfare — was struck by a bus while crossing the road near the Mathematics Department.
She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. The heartbreaking incident has raised serious concerns about traffic safety within the university premises.
Students Protest Against Negligence
Following the incident, students launched a protest inside the campus, chanting slogans against the administration. They accused university officials of negligence and demanded accountability and stricter traffic control.
Protesting students emphasized that no proper speed breakers, pedestrian crossings, or traffic signs exist inside the university, making it unsafe for students and staff. They also urged the administration to provide financial compensation to Aniqa’s family and immediately implement safety reforms.
“Every day, we see buses speeding through the campus. There are no proper signs or safety barriers. This was bound to happen,” said one student protester.
University Administration Orders Inquiry
Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi expressed deep sorrow over the Karachi University student accident and directed the transport department to conduct a transparent investigation. The bus driver responsible for the incident has been suspended pending inquiry, while a committee has been tasked with submitting its findings within days.
The VC assured students that new safety measures, including speed breakers, traffic signboards, and road markings, will be installed immediately to prevent future tragedies.
