India Afghanistan Diplomatic Ties Reestablished After Years of Limited Contact
India Afghanistan diplomatic ties have entered a new phase as New Delhi officially announced the restoration of full diplomatic relations with Taliban-led Afghanistan. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi and confirmed that India would soon reopen its embassy in Kabul.
The announcement represents a major diplomatic shift since India reduced its presence in Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover in 2021. Jaishankar described the move as “a step forward in advancing mutual interests, trust, and regional cooperation.”
Kabul Indian Embassy Reopening Marks a Major Diplomatic Move
During the meeting, Jaishankar revealed that India’s technical mission in Kabul would now be upgraded to a full-fledged embassy, restoring direct diplomatic contact between the two nations.
“India is fully committed to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence,” he said. “Reopening our embassy is a testament to our long-standing relationship and our support for the Afghan people.”
Muttaqi’s week-long visit, approved by the UN Security Council from October 9 to 16, includes meetings with Afghan community members and visits to Agra and Deoband, underscoring India’s cultural and religious diplomacy. His visit marks the first by any Taliban foreign minister to India since the regime’s return to power.
India’s Policy Shift: From Distance to Direct Engagement
The restoration of India Afghanistan diplomatic ties represents a clear recalibration in India’s foreign policy. Previously, New Delhi had maintained a cautious stance, focusing mainly on humanitarian aid and people-to-people connections.

A key part of the Jaishankar Muttaqi meeting was dedicated to addressing terrorism and regional security concerns. Both leaders agreed that terrorism poses a threat to shared goals of stability and growth.
“Our shared goals are endangered by cross-border terrorism,” Jaishankar said. “We must coordinate efforts to combat it in all its forms.”
Muttaqi reassured India that Afghanistan “will not allow any group to use our territory against others.” This statement was seen as an important assurance given India’s ongoing concerns over militant activities in the region.
Trade, Mining, and Economic Opportunities
India also expressed interest in exploring new economic partnerships. Muttaqi invited Indian companies to participate in Afghanistan’s mining and infrastructure sectors, while Jaishankar welcomed the proposal, saying,
“Your invitation to Indian businesses is appreciated. We look forward to deepening our economic cooperation.”
The reopening of flights between Kabul and New Delhi has also been welcomed by both sides, signaling an improvement in trade connectivity and people-to-people engagement.

With the Kabul Indian Embassy reopening, the two nations are preparing for a fresh era of diplomatic cooperation. Experts view this move as part of India’s broader regional strategy to maintain influence amid shifting geopolitical dynamics involving China, Pakistan, and Central Asia.
