Sindh Electric Bus Route Officially Launched
KARACHI: The Sindh government has taken another major step toward sustainable transport with the launch of a new Sindh electric bus route connecting Gulshan-i-Maymar to Tower. The initiative, announced by Sindh Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon, reflects the province’s growing commitment to cleaner, greener mobility options for Karachi’s millions of commuters.
Speaking at a high-level transport department meeting on Tuesday, Memon confirmed that 15 brand-new electric buses will begin service on the newly launched route. This step is part of the Sindh government’s broader strategy to modernize urban mobility, improve public convenience, and reduce carbon emissions through renewable energy-driven vehicles.
A Push for Modern and Eco-Friendly Mobility
According to the minister, the Sindh electric bus route is designed to ease congestion, lower fuel dependency, and promote environmental protection. The government aims to expand the electric bus network across key Karachi routes in the coming months, gradually replacing conventional diesel buses with zero-emission electric fleets.
Memon emphasized that such initiatives will not only improve Karachi’s transport efficiency but also help fight the worsening air quality in urban centers. “Our focus is to make Karachi’s transport system affordable, reliable, and sustainable while protecting the environment,” he said.
Part of Sindh’s Broader Green Transport Vision
The Sindh electric bus route forms part of a long-term public transport modernization plan initiated by the Sindh government. The plan includes infrastructure upgrades, installation of charging stations, and the introduction of intelligent traffic management systems. These improvements aim to reduce travel times, improve passenger comfort, and align with global green mobility standards.
The government also plans to collaborate with local and international partners to enhance the production and maintenance of electric buses in Pakistan. This could create employment opportunities and promote local manufacturing in the transport sector.
Public Response and Future Expansion
Commuters and environmental experts have welcomed the Sindh electric bus route, describing it as a timely intervention in Karachi’s overburdened public transport system. With growing traffic and rising fuel costs, electric buses are expected to offer a cost-effective and eco-conscious alternative for daily travelers.
Officials from the transport department have indicated that more routes are being evaluated for future electric bus deployment. These expansions will help extend the network beyond Karachi, potentially connecting nearby urban districts under the same green mobility program.
