Pakistan Saudi Arabia Defense Agreement: PML-N Promises to Address PPP Concerns

PML-N to Brief Parliament on Defense Agreement

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has announced that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will present a detailed briefing to the National Assembly and Senate on October 3 regarding the Pakistan Saudi Arabia defense agreement.

According to insiders, the briefing will not only highlight the nature of the pact with Riyadh but will also touch on a 20-point agenda that defines Islamabad’s foreign policy with the United States. The government aims to show that the agreement with Saudi Arabia is part of a broader effort to strengthen Pakistan’s global standing and defense partnerships.

PPP Seeks Transparency and Inclusion

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a major coalition ally, has expressed reservations about being left out of discussions on the agreement. PPP leader Shazia Marri told local media that while her party supports any diplomatic achievement for Pakistan, it is concerned about not being formally informed.

She stated that PPP expects Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to brief Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari after his return from an overseas visit. “The Pakistan Saudi Arabia defense agreement is a positive development, but we need to be taken into confidence,” she said.

This reflects the PPP’s broader demand for coalition partners to be consulted on significant foreign policy decisions, especially those involving security and defense cooperation.

Coalition Dialogue to Resolve Frictions

The defense agreement debate comes at a time when cracks have appeared within the ruling alliance. Earlier, the PPP raised objections to statements made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, demanding a retraction. The issue was discussed in meetings between PPP leaders and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad.

Despite differences, both PML-N and PPP delegations met at the National Assembly chamber and agreed to resolve all disputes through dialogue. Senior leaders, including Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Rana Sanaullah, Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Syed Naveed Qamar, emphasized the importance of coalition harmony.

Strategic Importance of the Agreement

Analysts note that the Pakistan Saudi Arabia defense agreement could mark a new era of military cooperation, including training programs, intelligence sharing, and technology transfer. For Pakistan, this represents not only stronger ties with Riyadh but also a chance to balance regional dynamics.

The agreement is also viewed as a signal to the international community that Pakistan is pursuing stability and mutual security partnerships. However, its success depends on domestic political unity, making the PML-N’s outreach to PPP critical.

Building Consensus for Pakistan’s Future

The upcoming parliamentary briefing will be a test of the government’s ability to maintain trust within its coalition. By engaging the PPP and other allies, the PML-N hopes to present a united stance on defense and foreign policy.

If handled effectively, the Pakistan Saudi Arabia defense agreement could become a symbol of Pakistan’s growing diplomatic strength. However, failure to build consensus may fuel further political tensions at home.
