Pakistan-Afghanistan Relations at a Crossroads
KARACHI (September 28, 2025) — Pakistan-Afghanistan relations have once again come into focus as Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi called for stronger cooperation between the two neighboring countries. Speaking at a high-level meeting, he emphasized that positive and constructive engagement between Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only necessary but also in the long-term interest of both nations’ people.
Meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami Delegation
Amir Khan Muttaqi made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, led by Professor Muhammad Ibrahim. According to a statement from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Afghan foreign minister described Pakistan-Afghanistan relations as essential for peace, trade, and stability in the region. He further underlined that mutual visits, dialogues, and joint initiatives are crucial for building trust and overcoming decades-old challenges.
During the meeting, Muttaqi expressed his gratitude to Pakistan for providing shelter and support to millions of Afghan refugees over the past several decades. He noted that this gesture has left a deep impact on Afghanistan’s collective memory and has strengthened cultural and humanitarian ties between the two countries.
Role of Social and Religious Organizations
The Afghan foreign minister also recognized the contributions of social and religious organizations in promoting goodwill between the people of both nations. He particularly praised Jamaat-e-Islami for its social welfare services in Pakistan and acknowledged the constructive role of Pakistan’s religious groups in fostering community development.
On the other hand, Professor Ibrahim and members of the Jamaat-e-Islami delegation expressed appreciation for recent political and social developments in Afghanistan. They stressed that enhancing Pakistan-Afghanistan relations is vital to reduce misunderstandings and to promote closer people-to-people contacts.
Regional Cooperation and Stability
Muttaqi welcomed the fact that Pakistan, along with Russia, China, and Iran, had opposed the establishment of foreign military bases in Afghanistan. He said that regional cooperation on such issues shows that both countries can work together to defend mutual interests.
The meeting also highlighted the need to enhance trade, improve cross-border infrastructure, and facilitate cultural exchanges. Delegates agreed that improved cooperation can benefit communities on both sides of the Durand Line.
Looking Ahead: Hope for a Better Future
Both Afghan and Pakistani representatives expressed hope that closer engagement would bring lasting improvements to the lives of ordinary citizens. They agreed that peace and prosperity in Afghanistan will positively influence Pakistan, and vice versa, since the two nations share deep historical, cultural, and religious bonds.
Amir Khan Muttaqi concluded by stating that Pakistan-Afghanistan relations should be built on mutual respect, shared values, and joint efforts for regional peace. He stressed that through dialogue and cooperation, both countries could overcome mistrust and move towards a more stable and prosperous future.
