Lahore Cylinder Explosion: Two Dead, Three Injured in Lower Mall Blast

Tragic Lahore Cylinder Explosion Claims Two Lives

Lahore: A Lahore cylinder explosion in the city’s Lower Mall area claimed two lives and injured three others in a devastating incident on Wednesday. The explosion occurred while gas cylinders were being unloaded from a van, leading to a powerful blast that sent shockwaves across the area.

Residents heard a deafening sound followed by rising flames and smoke. Panic gripped nearby shops as people rushed to rescue the injured before emergency services arrived.

Explosion During Cylinder Unloading

According to police, the Lahore cylinder explosion occurred when a van carrying gas cylinders was being unloaded. One of the cylinders reportedly leaked gas, triggering multiple explosions.

The deceased include the van driver and an unidentified young girl who was passing by. Rescue 1122 personnel quickly reached the spot, extinguished the fire, and shifted the injured to Mayo Hospital Lahore.

A Rescue 1122 spokesperson said, “Our teams responded within minutes and prevented further explosions by isolating remaining cylinders.”

Authorities Launch Investigation

Following the Lahore cylinder explosion, police cordoned off the site and began collecting evidence. A forensic team is examining the damaged cylinders to determine whether safety protocols were violated.

Police have also initiated inquiries against the supplier responsible for transporting the cylinders. “We are verifying whether proper safety measures were followed during loading and transport,” a police official told reporters.

The Deputy Commissioner Lahore has ordered a city-wide inspection of all gas cylinder transport vehicles and refilling points to prevent similar incidents.

Public Safety and Expert Concerns

The Lahore cylinder explosion has renewed public concern over poor safety standards in Pakistan’s gas distribution sector. Experts believe weak enforcement of safety laws and unlicensed refilling stations are major contributors to recurring accidents.

Fire safety expert Irfan Malik noted, “Most of these cylinders are refilled at unauthorized shops without testing. One spark is enough to cause a tragedy.”

Citizens expressed outrage over recurring incidents, urging the government to ensure strict checks. “Every few months, we hear about another cylinder blast in Lahore. It’s time for real accountability,” said a local shopkeeper.

Medical Response and Victim Details

Hospital sources confirmed that all three injured victims are under treatment for burns and trauma. The deceased van driver has been identified, while efforts are underway to confirm the identity of the young girl.

Doctors at Mayo Hospital stated that one of the injured remains in critical condition. The hospital administration praised the swift response of Rescue 1122 teams in minimizing casualties.

Past Incidents Highlight Ongoing Risk

This Lahore cylinder explosion follows a series of similar incidents across Punjab. In 2023, a blast in Shahdara injured six, while another in Johar Town caused heavy property damage. Despite repeated warnings, enforcement remains weak.

Safety organizations, including National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), have urged strict implementation of cylinder inspection and certification procedures to reduce accidents.
